View Full Version : Database Research Question????

One thing ive noticed during 10+ years of playing ICC(yes ive forked out for every version since ICC1) , is the poor quality of the database....usually after each release the first thing posted is a database error thread, and then even after long awaited updates there is usually still glaring errors.
Now my questions which hopefully will be passed onto chris by those very helpful chaps Aus/Sureshot are as follows :
1) Why doesnt chris take a leaf out of sega/fm and have a scout/researcher for each county?, to keep him upto date accurately with squad info.
2) Why doesnt chris have a few different people beta test the game or cross reference the data before release to check for errors/bugs etc?.
I apologise if im being picky, but as a cricket fan and an ICC fan i am a stickler for stats and accurate info, there is nothing more annoying than starting the game and finding your young batsman has been put in the game as a bowler or you have the wrong overseas player etc etc.......surely with a few dedicated people who have deep knowledge of their counties, this would stop the constant database error thread!!!.

Valid points, as ever we are as frustrated with database errors as you are. It can also be subjective, some may think, for example, that Neil Carter is an all-rounder, others a bowler. Of course some times it is plain wrong.
Getting a researcher for each county? Nice idea, though maybe not wholly practical for every county, besides you may also have a cost issue to bare.
We will be doing extensive testing in ensuring the 2009 database is as accurate as possible, it's my responsibility and prerogative (big word for 20 to 1 in the morning!) to make sure you don't end up with KP as being an opening bowler, though he does have the go of one!

Thanks for the reply sureshot, yes i suppose the cost issue would be a problem, and i agree that it can also be subjective.....especially with all rounders, as for Neil Carter..i believe he now opens the batting for Warwicks in the one day game in a pinch hitting role, Stuart Broad is another one, is his batting now good enough for him to be classed as a genuine allrounder?.
Anyway good luck with your research and enjoy many hours with your head buried in the "2009 Cricketers whos who" or the good old wisden almanac(Bible).

Plus, you could always just get a few of us on the forum to have a look over the database (In lists) before the game is released, in order to avoid embarrassment (Instant patching)

Another way would be to release the demo a week or two before the full release, then open a database error thread straight away, then you would be able to have it all corrected for the full release....ie using the demo as a sort of beta.

Mark,
You go and watch Notts much? Im good mates with a couple of the Notts lads and i know for a fact that Stuey Broad and Baz Hales are massive Cricket Captain badgers! They love it! Im sure a few of the other pros play it too!
Phenominal idea with county researchers, im sure the majority of users on this forum would be more than happy to do research for free if it means better accuracy, so cost is a poor excuse.

Hi there Bails, yeah i go to trent bridge a fair bit, mostly one dayers and 20/20 games. Yes i agree, anyone who is a fan of ICC would help Sureshot out with the Database and provide any county info he needs for free....just to get more accurate info.
As for Broady and Alex hales....i wonder if they are happy with their own abilites in ICC?, Stuart is good in the game, takes bags of wickets, though very expensive at times, and Alex hales develops well on Technique training after a couple of seasons....though for some reason they have him down as a very defensive player, when in reality he opens in 20/20!!!.
How have you found the Notts squad in ICC2008?

I don't think that would be possible with publisher commitments.
Nice to know you're always happy to help, helps us a lot. We shall consider it for future versions, probably unlikely for 09. 2010? Who knows.
We really appreciate your feedback on this, and it will be considered by us.

MarkNotts sorry for delay, First question Broad asks is "am in the England side?" Other than that hes happy with his ability apart from hes RMF rather than RFM! I think the Notts side is fairly accurate for when it was done. Nobody knew the impact Pattinson would have...Hopefully Graeme Swann will be better on the 2009 version. I think Samit Patel has been done to perfection by the developers. Possibly the most accurate player ive come across to real life. I hope they havent changed him for 09.
I think a bit more research could be done into the younger players on the circuit. Some of them will be stars of the future. But i dont think there is 1 player who starts the game under the age of 22 who becomes a regular international player with the exception of perhaps Rashid who ive never played against at international level on ICC. Players like Woakes, James Taylor, Hales, Finn should become decent players and not fade out.

Can I just ask who does the Pakistan research? I find it by and large accurate, just a few issues in previous years which would be great to discuss with someone.
Cheers

RMF is quicker than RFM in the game, as it should be. (Haven't we been here before? :D)

But this doesnt reflect in all players - for instance, why are Gul and Asif of Pakistan RFM in that case?

I wouldn't say either of them are quicker than an average of 84/85mph. Not from what I've seen of them.

Mid-80s is a about right for them (though they have both hit 90 as well), but when I said it doesnt reflect them, I mean compared to say, the likes of Kabir Ali who isnt as quick as them, but is classed as RMF. I can think of many more examples.

Pretty sure Kabir Ali is classed as a RFM. I haven't played for a few months, but I'm almost sure of this.

But is someone like Gul any slower than a Broad or Sidebottom? Or even a Stuart Clark? I dont think so, they all come under the same category for me.

Obviously It's difficult to get them all right, and it's debatable. I would probably agree with you on Sidey, although he seems to be back bowling regualrly at 87 now. Broad is definitely quicker, regularly in the 90's.

It would be simpler if we just did what the Aussies do. RM, RFM, RF

That's exactly how it should be.
RFM and RMF cause confusion. an example with Pakistan is Razzaq and Gul are both considerd RFM when in fact, Gul is roughly on average 5-10mph quicker than Razzaq.
