Which version of ICC 2009 will you be getting?

The boxed one
or
The downloadable one

Personally, I always buy the boxed one and this year will be no different.

i reckon the boxed one. It feels more secure.

After having a terrible time with Steam (having to scan pictures of my game box - I don't actually have a scanner, so not as easy as it sounds - send it off, wait SEVEN WEEKS to get my games reactivated on my account, only for 5 months later the same thing to happen again). I am not a fan of online DRM.

I bought radio broadcasts from the 70's from a site that went "pop".

Every few months the built in DRM insisted on being checked on-line. As a consequence, when these few months were up - and the site (which had associations with the BBC) was no longer there, I lost my purchases.

I have the files, but they now won't play. I have been told (in so many words) tough luck !

BBC say they are "looking into it" but only in terms of any future deals they make with resellers. Ok it was only £12, but it shows the very real perils of online DRM.

I want something in a flipping box, with media that plays when I want it to. When I upgrade my PC (which I do more than once a year) I want to just reinstall..not wait for weeks for someone to authorise an activation code, then question me, or worse (as above) prevent me from using software either forever, or for months on end.
Seems to me that if Steam and the BBC can cock up, then anyone can. I don't feel safe with online DRM, I don't feel I have the control I should have as a licenced user. I would rather have DRM on system (even though most of these have a bad name) at least I'm in control.

Regards

Paul

lol i was thinking the same thing.. time you wait for post, and its gonna cost more.
Trouble is it might be a big game to download and internet in theses parts is pretty slow and unreliable. oh well.

I guess once you download the software you don't need to rely on anything but your computer (unless you play Online, which I do rarely). It's really about the inbuilt license-key feature more than anything else. I've used downloaded versions all my life, and never had a problem.

I don't see any real benefit in either, except you don't need to wait 2-5 business days with the downloadable one. Plus everyone will download it for the trial anyway, so all it needs is a payment and you continue on your way

It's that key (which needs updating when you change hardware and re-install) that is my biggest gripe. The site that verifies the licence was gone, it couldn't return the activation code, and the products were basically unusable.

Don't know why Steam keeps dropping my account details, but it's left me with a bad taste. ( I only use Steam on my main PC, never try and install software more than once, have not forgot my password or user name, or secret question etc..it just keeps messing up.)

Still, i'm probably a minority. But when all software goes download, is when I stop buying it.

I have never had problems *touch wood* with steam, i downloaded the last one. The only gripe i have with it was if you activate it on one screen name, then my brother wants to play on it a loads it up on his it wants to be activated again  you run out of activations then the game locks, then u have to email to get some more. Then u tell your brother not to load it on his screen, he forgets then it starts over again  Lucky that shouldn't be the case this time as i have my own comp now :D
